Josephine Chan

Piano Instructor

Josephine Chan began her piano studies at the age of six, and by her youth was already
performing and competing across the United States. She earned her Bachelor’s degree
in Piano Performance from the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, studying
under the guidance of John and Nancy Weems. Her musical journey then took her north
to Rochester, New York, where she completed her Master of Music degree and
Performer’s Certificate at the prestigious Eastman School of Music under renowned
Russian pianist and pedagogue Natalya Antonova.

During her university years, Josephine performed in masterclasses for celebrated artists
including Stephen Hough, Horacio Gutiérrez, Earl Wild, Abbey Simon, and Dr. Nelita
True, among others. She recalls one of her most treasured moments: performing at the
historic Eastman Theater before family, friends, teachers, and colleagues. “The
atmosphere was absolutely breathtaking—walking out onto that stage, surrounded by
people who were there to support me, was unforgettable.”

Following her time at Eastman, Josephine moved to Toronto to join the faculty of the
Royal Conservatory of Music, where she taught for over two decades. In 2011, she also
began teaching at Branksome Hall, cultivating a vibrant studio of students ranging from
first-time beginners to advanced musicians preparing for Royal Conservatory
examinations and music festivals. She is especially passionate about working with
beginners and young learners, fostering both strong technique and a lifelong love of
music.

After 22 years in Toronto, Josephine has returned to her hometown of Houston to be
closer to family. She is excited to reconnect with the local music community, rediscover
the city she grew up in, and build a new chapter for her private studio.
