Joanna Reeder
Piano Instructor
Joanna Reeder Mbasogo, NCTM, is a pianist and teacher in Houston, Texas. A native of North Carolina, Joanna grew up in a musical family and fell in love with performing alongside her siblings, in her school’s choir, and with Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras. She studied Piano Performance at Furman University in South Carolina, with Dr. Ruby Morgan and Dr. David Gross. Additional influential teachers during this time include Sandra Shen (Brevard Music Center) and Alessandro Tricomi (Arezzo, Italy).
In 2015, Joanna moved to Houston to pursue a masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Houston, where she studied with Nancy Weems and Dr. Courtney Crappell. During this time, she presented her pedagogical and musical research at the local, state, and national levels. As a performer, she has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Union Symphony Orchestra, Furman University Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras. Joanna is the recipient of the Hirsch Memorial Scholarship Endowment, the Sigma Alpha Iota collegiate honor award, and is a member of the national music honors society, Pi Kappa Lambda.
Joanna serves on the piano faculty at St. John’s School, where she teaches students K-12 in group, private, and partner lessons. In the summers, Joanna enjoys running and teaching piano camps at St. Andrew’s SOFA and AFA. She brings a vast experience of group-style learning – ranging from early child-hood music teaching to collegiate and retired adult piano classes – to the studio. Currently, she serves as Vice President of Forum MTA and on the TMTA Performance Contest and Theory committees. She also enjoys serving on the music and worship team at her local church.
When she’s not busy teaching or practicing or volunteering, you may find Joanna traveling with her husband, visiting family, watching her adorable nieces, reading in a coffee shop, or on a run in Buffalo Bayou park.
